Title: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on January 08, 2009, 04:55:34 pm Well as long as I have goals and accomplishments on the brain this week... let's look ahead for 2009. Do you feel comfortable posting your goals for the year?
I'll put down some of mine and will plan to come back and update this thread throughout the year as I accomplish some of them. Although I am focusing here on professional goals, you can do professional or personal as you wish. Will anyone be brave enough to join me and make their commitment public??? 1) Lead a PowerPoint 2007 Study Group (planned for Jan/Feb 2009). 2) Lead an Outlook 2007 Study Group (planning for Mar/Apr 2009). 3) Pass the PowerPoint 2007 Certification Exam by June 1, 2009. 4) Pass the Outlook 2007 Certification Exam by June 1, 2009. 5) Pass the Access 2007 Certification Exam by September 1, 2009. 6) Write an article and submit it for publication (note, my goal is not necessarily to be published - because I don't have control over that part!!!) 7) Review options for returning to college and choose what major I would pursue. Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on January 08, 2009, 05:05:16 pm Marie,
I am actually wondering if it's worth upgrading my version of MOS Certification. Do you think it's worth it even if the version I am using in work is older? I would either like to stay in this role and be busier, or find my ideal job somewhere else, if that's possible. Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on January 08, 2009, 05:46:51 pm Since you think you may be looking for a job within the next year or two, I think it is worth upgrading. It may not be required in the next job, but knowing ahead of time what is coming as a standard always ends up being a positive.
If I remember correctly, your MOS is in 2000? 2003 does not have enough difference to justify recertifying, but 2007 has an enormous number of changes in the user interface. Plus a new certification pursuit might give you an activity to reduce the boredom you are currently experiencing!!! :) Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on January 08, 2009, 07:13:32 pm Yes I have 2000 certification. Since I haven't experienced much beyond XP, is there a lot to pick up in 2007? I've not seen 2007 yet.

Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: Cathy S on January 09, 2009, 05:49:50 pm My challenges for 2009 are a mixed bag of home and work:
Work - there are changes in who I support and the structure of the role - which will be a challenge all it's own. My contract runs until October this year and we are working hard to find the right niche for me to stay here in a permanent role; so I have a number of projects which will increase my visibility with the powers that be and I need to complete those really well. Training - I am seriously considering taking the IAM Advanced Diploma in Administrative Management. Home - I have issues to sort out with an adult 'child' still at home and demotivated; I have recently taken over as Treasurer at Church so establishing myself in that will be challenging. After several knee injuries I am determined to get back to some good (not necessarily heavy going) hill walking with my dogs this year - so I have set myself the goal of a day's walking one weekend each month. Personally - During the past year I have discovered that I am quite skilled as a team working and life coach. The result of this has been a much happier team of people to work with and a new really good friend. I aim to build on this during 2009 and to set an example I want to challenge myself to do something which overcomes a lifetime of fear of heights so I am looking to organise a team activity day which will provide this Challenge for me and where they can be supportive. So quite a bit to pack into the next 10 months! I'll get started and try and let you know how I go on from time to time. Cathy Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on January 13, 2009, 04:01:48 pm Come on people, don't be afraid to post your goals. Writing them down increases your chances of success exponentially!!! How about picking just one goal that you are willing to commit to during the next 3 months??? :)
Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on January 13, 2009, 04:07:56 pm Marie I think you scared them off....

Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: happyclappy on January 13, 2009, 04:24:56 pm Apart from learning my new job, I'm doing my last bit of law school so I have far too much studying on the horizon.
After I have done my exams, I will get some sleep. Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: JessW on January 13, 2009, 05:26:01 pm "Chickens"?
Never! Just thinking! 2009 goal - pay rise! (no joke, I would really like a pay rise!) Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: happyclappy on January 13, 2009, 05:48:40 pm Now, a pay rise is a good goal. So many companies are shedding staff, freezing pay or cutting it. Good luck.
Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on January 13, 2009, 06:46:51 pm OK... Let's use pay rise (or raise as we'd call it over here) :) as an example....
Obviously you have limited control over that outcome, but there are steps you can take. What do you plan to do to accomplish that goal? Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on January 13, 2009, 06:54:11 pm Well happy - completion of law school is certainly a goal and an accomplishment!!!
Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: JessW on January 14, 2009, 09:56:09 am MM, I am thinking on that. Part of it will be luck, part good work, part value for money, part outperforming everyone else who has done my job for my direct reports as well as impressing the right management people.
Wish me luck! Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on January 14, 2009, 10:09:43 am Good luck Jess. I just wish I had enough work to do never mind outperform or impress anyone!
Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: JessW on January 14, 2009, 11:32:19 am Gee,
Whilst I would not recommend it (or wish it on anyone) it does help when one fee earner is off with a trapped nerve (rugby injury) and the other works from home and has no telephone / internet connection / electricity!. It means I am also available to assist others with all sorts of 'problems'. J Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on January 14, 2009, 12:24:07 pm Jess, when you get the chance to shine, you go girl! I hear that pay rise being calculated right now!
Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: viviennenoyle on January 14, 2009, 01:20:12 pm My one major goal is to finally get my driving licence - I can actually drive quite well, but something always seems to go wrong on the day of the test. It's been on hold for a while, mainly because I injured my foot and couldn't operate the clutch pedal, but also because money ran out. That is my most important goal for the year.
Other than that, I want to go back to my Open University studies. I have a diploma in music from them, which together with the other entry level course I completed is half a degree. I realised last summer that finishing that degree is very important to me personally (probably not professionally) and I want to start again this year with some shorter courses to ease my way back in to university level study. I completed my diploma in 1999, so I've been out of the habit of studying and didn't have a job then so I want to make sure I can juggle the two things before I commit to a full course. Even more personally, I want to get fit again and hopefully even run a race for charity. The same foot injury that put the kybosh on my driving also made it impossible for me to walk any distance, never mind do any exercise, so I put on weight and lost all the fitness I'd gained during the spring and summer. I want to get back to where I was before that happened, then improve on it. Not much to be getting on with!!! Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on January 15, 2009, 03:42:39 pm Here's one Marie, don't go to the vending machine with more money than you need for a cuppa, otherwise you spend the rest on chocolate!!
Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: Atlanta Z3 on January 16, 2009, 05:11:22 pm Work out 250 days this year - this may get bumped down to 200 haven't firmed up this decision.
I would like to pass powerpoint certification, if I can find a 2003 testing site! Learn as much as possible in my new position! To this goal, I want to look at some of the paralegal classes, as a refresher to the certificate program I took a few years ago. Travel as much as possible this year! My dh works for an airline, when he is scheduled to work weekends I intend to try for one day or weekend trips. I want some of these to be educational as well as fun. For example I want to vist President Madison's house. Title: Re: 2009 Goals... update Post by: JessW on January 20, 2009, 05:25:28 pm Update...
There is a god! 2.5% is better than a kick in the teeth! Thank you bosses, thank you DD'ers who wished me luck, thank you ...[please fill in banal speach from Oscars/Emmis/etc! So now what's your next goal for the new year??? :) Marie Title: Re: 2009 Goals... update Post by: gee4 on January 20, 2009, 06:33:46 pm That's true Jess. Once you get it, they can't take it away.

Marie Peer Moderator Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: itsme_calista on May 07, 2009, 08:22:32 am I have no idea where I was when this was setup, so I never added my goals. If I had written this in January then they would have looked something like ;
1) Build up my virtual assistant business with an aim to going p/t or f/t by the end of the year. 2) Lose weight! 3) Research taking further qualifications, whether it be MOS 2007 or a Level 4. 4) Get my boss to understand my role and qualifications further so I'm not so bored and he gets the best out of me. Well, I'm leaving tomorrow and my boss isn't even coming in to the office this week to even say goodbye, so I know how much I am valued by him (roll my eyes to the ceiling) so No 4 never happened, but on the back of that obviously that makes No 1 happen so swings and roundabouts about how I feel there. So ... 1) Happening and my redundancy pay means I don't have to worry about wages for 6 months, so I can definitely work hard on growing the business. 2) Not happened yet, but now I have much more time on my hands and so I can definitely go to the gym more etc. 3) Still researching. Might change it to more business orientated in line with my VA business. 4) Well I'm redundant so that won't happen now LOL. Callie Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: gee4 on May 07, 2009, 08:37:18 am Callie,
Redundancy is hard no matter what age we are. Forget your boss. If he valued you, he would make it into the office, take you to lunch.....anything. I fail to understand why individuals react as if we have suddenly got the plague. A few words of support wouldn't go amiss. But hey, onwards and upwards. Here's to the next 6 months! ![]() Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on May 07, 2009, 02:35:14 pm Oh Calista, I am indeed sorry about you losing your job, but on the plus side, this definitely sounds like a great time to start your business!
How about breaking down your #1 goal into the next five steps you are going to take in your business (keep everything in small chunks), such as: 1) Choose a company name. 2) Reserve a web domain name. 3) Decide on a pricing structure. 4) Set up a basic website explaining my services and contact information. 5) Order business cards. :) Marie Peer Moderator Title: Re: 2009 Goals... It's been a while since I've checked in but thought I'd update you :) Still waiting for my redundancy to be paid out! I have sent a rather terse email this morning that states I am no longer prepared to accept excuses and any financial costs that I incur will need to be met by them. Anyhow, my VA (virtual assistance) business is going well, a bit slow and I could do with increasing my income but it's happening. I have 3 main clients and my work for them is varied and interesting :) I've just qualified as a Social Media Specialist with VAClassroom and so loving it. I've signed up to get info on starting an Access course at the local Uni in September, after which I am thinking about a a degree in Marketing. My website is up and running, although the rewrite and blog (which I finished on Friday) I accidently deleted from the server and my IT girl is on holiday :( Attending lots of networking events and it's been a real transition from being the PA behind the desk to the Owner/PA having to sell her skills! My old boss has been seriously demoted and the division I work for has been closed, all the staff under that division have been merged into another division, and the other PA that works for it, has an inkling that she will be next to go as they are trying to move everything to the Head Office. So glad I got out when I did. Callie Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? -- to get promoted. Towards that end, I was putting in for any position that I was interested in that I qualified for. And as of July 6, 2009, I was promoted from a GS-11 to a GS-12! Just went through my first major main office inspection as a manager/supervisor and feel like it went smoothly and I passed with flying colors. Assistant to the Main Bossie from Central Office remembered my name, as did Main Bossie, from when they'd come through before and met me in my other post and had good things to say about me. Assistant stated he was extremely pleased when he heard that I had been promoted, and that he saw a lot of positives in what I'm doing. So... Yippee me! Tomorrow's outbriefing will be the truth on how our office is doing, but at least I left a positive impression on them all both previously and this time around. Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Post by: Atlanta Z3 on August 21, 2009, 09:25:29 pm Gee I've been around a block oh a couple of times and this would not set off bells for me. I have watched a particular industry and certain companies in my town. Certain jobs seem to be constantly advertised. I know who the position reports to and why they are often open. I interviewed last summer for a very large tax consutling firm in my town last summer - just recently I saw the same position advertised. I had done an 8 hour interview (no joke all day interview for an admin position - 4 hours of tests, lunch with the other admins and then a round of interviews with all senior staff members). I did not get the position and I don't think it was filled for several more months, only to be open in 8-9 months.
There could be any number of reasons the position yoru position is open: illness, senior staff change, termination, different skill set needed etc. I would try to find someone in the department to talk to and get more information as to why the position is open. Then I would decide if this is the right time for a change. Title: Re: 2009 Goals... Do You Dare Post Them??? Post by: msmarieh on December 28, 2009, 10:00:37 pm Final 2009 update
