Title: So what's your favourite part of your job?
Post by: andream on August 20, 2003, 01:02:07 pm
Sometimes we spend a lot of time talking about what's bad at work, so on this beautiful sunshiney London day,,, the question the day is...

What's your favourite part of your job? The challenge you like the best, or the part that's the most fun?

I love the comaradarie of the other admins.  I love being able to help my boss with whatever he/she happens to be involved in.  But most I love doing research and (believe it or not - call me crazy) the challenge of monthly financial reports.

My budget work!  Since getting into this, I have come to enjoy this the most in my job.  My secretarial work is getting dull and boring compared to the accounting end of things.  Over the last (oh my gosh, is it really 10 years????), I have taken on more and more accounting responsibility and less and less secretarial work, which suits me just fine.  I am still hoping (and am constantly working toward that goal) that one of these days I will work my way into a new position that will be entirely accounting.  I've spoken with my business manager and she is all for it as well.  The only problem right now is lack of funds.  But one day when the economy is better, I hope to be doing a happy dance on DD!!!!!

Several things I enjoy about my job:

I love making travel arrangements for the Managers and Supervisors whom I don't understand how they can travel the way they do as I have done it only once and now have a greater respect for them in that part of their job.  I love helping them out and making sure each and every trip goes uneventful.

Second, I love helping out our Accounts Payable Department as needed.  If one of the three ladies is out on vacation, etc. I am the backup and I truly enjoy doing that kind of input/data entry work.  Seems like busy work but at least it's that and I am doing something constructive and helpful to that department at the same time.

Thirdly, I love doing research especially when it pays off.  I had the opportunity to do that not too long ago for bossie and unfortunatley there was not much information gathered that's new, but at least we have the information that is currently available and can work from that til the new stuff comes in.  I also found a contact person that is fairly reliable in responding (from the government if you can believe that) and letting me know if there has been any final decisions made or any new information posted yet.

I always love learning new things and am most definetly a hands on person.  If I'm not busy doing that I get totally bored and frustrated very quickly.

Fourth and last but not least, I have a super boss whom I've now had the pleasure of working with for 6 years.  He's very flexible and very approachable about most things and is always willing to let me try new things (within reason of course).  Most recently we were awarded a huge contract and they needed lots of help out of state.  Lo and behold the first time in 5+ years he's allowed me to leave the nest as it were and help out another department to reach their already shortened deadline.  Fortunatley we made it with lots of hands on deck pulled from other locations that we operate.  Quite the experience indeed.

Uh...it's close to my house, and I can pretty much wear whatever I want. And for as long as I'm here, I have a Palm.

That's about it.

The variety of tasks involved.
The encouragement to learn new things.

I live 1 mile from work, I can walk in or not depending upon how lazy I feel, and my bosses don't really comment on/notice what I do or do not wear.

My bosses take me out for lunch or a drink after work occasionally, that is very good.

And last but not least I work just that bit too far away to go on a really big retail therapy bender at lunch times (boohoohoo says I, Teeheehee says bank manager) - sorry don't know if that is good or bad.

1. My office is located right by the waterfront, which is a wonderful place to go walking during lunch!

2. I actually like straight typing!

During my last performance review, I likened my job to being the stage manager for a Broadway show -- not in the spotlight myself, but there to support the performers on the stage.  (Even if sometimes they change the show and don't tell me!)

In that role, I like having the autonomy to look ahead and see small problems on the horizon and just quietly take care of them before they become large problems in the here and now.

Personally, I get a lot of satisfaction even if nobody else notices.  My boss said at my review, "I probably don't know 80% of what you do around here, but I know that if you're involved in something, it will be taken care of and I don't have to worry about it."

Now THAT'S a compliment!

The best thing is the freedom and trust my boss gives me to just get on and do things.

I also love organising their trips from beginning to end.

There isn't anything I would say that I actively dislike in my job.  Like Helen sitting there above me, I enjoy the professional freedom my boss gives me.  That's a great bonus.  I particularly like the contact I have with people both face-to-face and on the phone.  A great part of my work is with professional conduct and medical malpractice, so I have some tough problems to deal with and it's wonderful to be able to resolve them.  There are really nice projects I work on, too, such as our national Council elections and Awards Programme.

Izabella,

Now that was cute.  That's my 2nd favourite part.  The first is my paycheck ;)  A close 3rd is the fun I have working with such wonderful and crazy people.

blufire21,

I must admit though that is my fave part of my job ;)... oh okay I like the paycheck  and the fact that work is 5 minutes away from my house...

Have a great day!

Well I'm self employed as some of you may remember (!) and the thing I like the best is the variety in the day.  I can be at the parliament, then in the restaurant, then in a consultant's office and then the folk who sell whisky - it's very very mixed, often hectic and pressurised, but I wouldn't change it for the world.  I'd just like more hours in the day - who wouldn't!!!

My favourite part is the research and the problem solving I need to do
