Title: What is your best tip for using Microsoft Word? Post by: susans on May 13, 2008, 04:25:50 pm What is your best tip for using Microsoft Word? (don't be shy, even if it just Ctrl C for copy, let us know!)

Post by: itsme_calista on May 13, 2008, 04:30:33 pm I'll have a think on it but for me the first thing I do is to change the toolbars to suit the functions I need. I always add "shrink to fit" and "envelopes and labels" buttons to the toolbar.

I've taught entire classes on it and I am in the process of writing a book on the subject (great tips for Office, not just Word).
I would say Find and Replace - which is so much more powerful than people realize... You can replace white space (i.e. when you bring over text from an email and it has a thousand tabs and spaces in every line). You can replace the yellow highlighter some helpful coworker used to make comments (instead of using Word's built in comment feature). You can replace all occurences of a font with a different font and so much more. My other favorite tips include: Format Painter - which fixes automatic numbering when you want paragraphs between the numbered lists that are NOT numbered and Styles - a vastly underutilized feature that allows you to use so many more functions in Word (table of contents, document map) and gives your larger documents consistency. I always use it especially when assisting others who are not au fait with Office, they appreciate any tips I give them.
The other day I assisted a co-worker - whilst using Outlook she seemed to lose the 'From' field in her Deleted Items. All I did was right click in the menu area, selected field chooser, and dragged and dropped the 'From' field where she needed it. Title: Re: What is your best tip for using Microsoft Word? I knew there was a way of doing that, but I couldn't think what it was. I had exactly that problem the other day, and ended up retyping a couple of lines while grumbling that I'd forgotten how to change it! |
