Gee - how rude Merely an honest observation. That's why we have people in work to do jobs like shredding so we can get on with the more important tasks.

Gee, since you obviously are not understanding my question, nor the responses provided, perhaps it would be best to not say anything. Some of us are posting ideas that we use to refocus when needed, and you seem intent on tearing into people because it is not the way it is done at your company or in your world. We are not attacking the way your company handles things or how you do your job, and we are not stating how we are doing our jobs in our companies. We are simply putting out ideas/suggestions that we use when we (for whatever reason) cannot focus and still have a job that needs to get done. Since you have stated several times that this does not happen to you and you do not have this problem, then I do not see where you are required to say anything. Let those who this does apply to have the floor and a chance to speak.

You seem to miss the point that the replies people are posting are saying to me they need more time to focus in work than actualy do any work...that is quite worrying for any employer.
If you are not up to the job then maybe it's time for a change.
Like you I have an opinion so am within my rights to post what I observe. It isn't me who is saying I cannot focus.
Maybe you want to explain your question a bit more....as in what is preventing you from focussing. You haven't really answered that question. If it's not the job then it must be personal issues, so I would suggest time out, deal with those issues, and then return when you are ready.
I can't see how watering plants is gonna solve anyone's problems.

Play nice.. please.
I have moments when it's hard to concentrate especially if there are way too many other things going on. I try to bounce around between multiple things to distract myself enough at work. Hopefully there is enough items to do that, and some days it's hard to do. Our office environment is very hit n miss and latley alot of hit going on. If one department is busier than the other I will bounce from one to the other just for a break.

Everyone has an opinion and is allowed to ask questions and make observations.
I find it bizarre that some in high profile jobs working for some senior people need to ask how to refocus. Something is not right there.

definition: Focus: to concentrate: to focus one's thoughts Generally considered to be a temporary thing, when referred to as a loss of focus. ---------------------------------------------------- 99.9% of the time I do not have any problems, but occassionally (like the other day) I was unable to stay focused on any one topic for long. In my job, that means I am unable to do my job to my normal high standards and as quickly as I normally can. I am not asking how I need to refocus, but thought it was a good general discussion question as to how others refocus when they hit that temporary loss of focus in their jobs. Since personal issues, work issues, stresses in and out of the office, etc can affect a person's focus, I figured that this was something that most PA's/Admins/etc would have experienced at some time in their career and could share their tips and tricks used when that occurred.
This was simply an attempt to get some activity and discussions on the board, a collaborative sharing of ideas, not a solution to my problem.

Isn't this the very thing DD members have criticised assistants for?
How many postings have nitpicked junior admins who have not been focussed or are too distracted to help you out when you have longed for them to do the job faster/better etc?
Not everyone experiences what you experience CG so you have to accept some of us don't feel this way. Like I said, I think taking time off is best.
Remember if you cannot give 100% then don't expect juniors to either. It would be unfair to criticise those in junior positions who have felt the same way you do. Some guidance and help might just be what they need not criticism.

Gee it must be absolutely wonderful to be so perfect 100% of the time that your attention is never misplaced for one moment. On the other hand, I can't imagine how you can possibly multi task with that attitude either. After all, if you are only focusing on the one single thing you are working on, how can you possibly think of other things? And if you are thinking of other things, how can you possibly say you are 100% focused.
The rest of us humans have moments where we can't concentrate. It has not been implied in this thread by anyone other than you that anyone is doing it all the time or that it is a regular problem at their job. It is something that can happen on occasion. PLEASE stop belittling the other posters and treating them as if they are incompetent morons on the job because they have a momentary lack of concentration.

Haven't you just utterly and completely contradicted yourself here Marie? "If working on one thing, then I'm not thinking of other things, and yet if thinking of other things, I'm not focussed?! Huh?
How would you imagine, you don't know me, that's why. Who said I only focus on one single thing? When I am in work, I focus on work and get things done. Of course I am 100% focussed, that's what I get paid for, to do my job. It's called planning, proritising, multi-tasking, isn't that what we are trained to do? I don't get easily distracted and certainly not by matters outside of work. I am in work for a reason. If we are not focussed then you cannot criticise others.
I can't help it if that's how I roll. I try and impart knowledge on this site to explain to others how I manage time, how I focus. If you understood my workplace, you would know what is expected of individuals. You can't be distracted in such a fast-past environment, no room for that. If you are, move or find another job.
Who is belittling who now with those comments? Who said anything about morons?! Very insulting that is tut tut.

This morning at work while typing out a particularly long document which contained more tables of figures than text and to me was so boring as the figures meant nothing to me, I found I was letting myself be distracted by anything and everything but obviously this was delaying me finishing the document and dragging out my pain! I told myself that if I concentrated on getting it done, I could have a reward of one of the lovely cakes someone had bought in - substitute cake for whatever you would prefer - but basically what I am saying is that I had a goal in mind that was more appealing than what I was doing as a reward, this may help. Document now done and cake eaten

This thread has come at quite an opportune moment - I'm finding it difficult to stay focussed at the moment as my dad went into hospital yesterday for quite a lengthy operation (over 8 hours) and is still in intensive care. I've come into work to take my mind off this but find that every now and then my mind wanders to how he is. I've found that the best way for me to cope with this is to take a walk around the office and stop to chat with colleagues in other departments. Normally if the rest of the team were in I would chat to them but I'm all on my own today which is why I keep finding my mind wandering.
